June is here and that means national Oral Health Month is too! This is a great time to focus on taking better care of your pearly whites and your gums so you can have many years of healthier smiles to show off. According to the American Dental Association, dental health has come a long way since 5,000 years ago when the first known recorded dentist, Egyptian Hesi-Res took care of people’s teeth!

Dental History

-As recently as the 17th century, white enamel was starting to be used on the teeth and nitrous oxide was used to help people relax while getting dental care as comfortably as possible.

-Long before Covid-19, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 19th century made personal protective equipment PPE a thing for dental healthcare professionals.

-And if you like reclining while your mouth is being worked on, you can thank the American dentist, Josiah Flagg, for creating the first dental chair as we know it, complete with extended armrests that held medical instruments and even an adjustable headrest.

-While the 1800s saw the beginning of toothpaste in tubes, commercial floss arrived in 1882, and in 1960, electric toothbrushes also became a thing here in the states.

Daily Dental Care

Your mouth needs daily attention because while your body can heal itself your teeth can’t! And if your teeth are in poor health, that means your body won’t be far behind because weak or missing teeth can’t properly get the nutrients you need from the food you eat. Fresh fruit and veggies and chewy meats, all need strong teeth to bite, chew and eat properly. Strong tooth roots, supported gum tissue and healthy bone all work together to keep your teeth and body healthy.

Were you aware that flossing, along with daily brushing can prolong your life expectancy by up to six years? Flossing helps get rid of harmful dental plaque and tartar so it doesn’t spread throughout your body. And while brushing is crucial, flossing helps keep your mouth healthier while protecting against heart disease, oral cancers, Alzheimer’s, kidney failure and diabetes by cleaning in between teeth and below the gum line to get rid of harmful bacteria.

Smiling With Confidence

If you’re proud of your healthy smile, show it off! You can smile without embarrassment and share your oral hygiene tips with those you love! If you have issues with your smile, now is the time to take care of them before they get worse. We are happy

The dental profession is one of the oldest medical professions around. There’s even evidence that it goes back to 12,000 BC, in which an ancient infected tooth contained remnants of a dental cleaning with flint tools.

The first written text we know that mentions dentistry is from 5000 BC; in which a Sumerian manuscript describes “tooth worms” as the origin of dental decay. This theory wasn’t actually confirmed as a sham until the 1700s.

In France in the middle ages, the first dentist guild formed. They called themselves by a different name however, and they did more than dentistry. These men referred to themselves as barbers. The performed a unique combination of teeth treatments, medical treatments and, yes, even hair care. Eventually, the guild evolved into two groups: barber surgeons with education and training did the special operations, while lay surgeons helped with more regular services.

In the 1700s, Pierre Fauchard, a Frenchman who is sometimes credited as the Father of Modern Dentistry, wrote a book called “The Surgeon Dentist: A Treatise on Teeth”. It detailed first complete dental system. With this knowledge, dentistry began to spread to other parts of the world, including the United States.

In 1840, the first dental college formed in Baltimore, Maryland. Then in 1873, Colgate began mass producing toothpaste and toothbrushes. However, Americans did not really start taking regular care of their teeth until after World War II, when American soldiers brought the knowledge of oral health care they had learned abroad back to their home towns.

In the past century, dental technology has evolved to become more aesthetic and more comfortable than ever before. Do your teeth need some attention? You can call Denver Restorative Dentistry in Broomfield, Colorado at 303-586-1019 to set up an appointment with Dr. Taylor Goggins.

Protect your child’s teeth from harm by keeping baby bottle tooth decay at bay. Although it is important to ensure a child is constantly fed, know the dangers of using various sugary drinks for young children and infants, as they can easily lead to tooth decay and cavities. The reason is often ascribed to the time the substances are exposed to a youngster’s teeth. Here are some helpful techniques to combat the effects of baby bottle tooth decay:

– When brushing a young child’s teeth, use a toothpaste dab about the size of a rice grain.

– Dispose of sugary drinks in baby bottles, such as sugar water, honey water, soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, and juice, as these can all contribute to baby bottle tooth decay.

– Teeth begin to erupt in an infant’s mouth around 5-7 months of age, at which time they need to be treated and cleaned daily.

– Never coat the top of a baby bottle in honey or other sugary supplies.

– Keep your child’s baby bottles clean and free of contamination, and never share any bottles or pacifiers with your infant until they have also been cleaned.

Please bring your child into Denver Restorative Dentistry for an oral exam from Dr. Taylor Goggins and our team in Broomfield, Colorado. You can schedule your visit by calling 303-586-1019. We look forward to helping your child achieve a healthy, happy smile!
