Spending adequate time to improve your oral health is known to greatly enhance your teeth and gums. Oral health care treatments can be achieved through oral hygiene routines or by altering and upgrading your diet. Another key aspect of oral health care focuses on always improving your lifestyle choices to not only prevent oral accidents and injuries but also to strengthen your teeth and gums.

You can help improve your oral health care by focusing on the foods you eat and how you care for your teeth after eating. Because your teeth are extra sensitive after you eat, you should avoid cleaning them with toothbrushes or abrasive toothpaste. Instead, try using alternative tools. This can be something as simple as using a water flosser or rinsing with mouthwash. With safe and effective teeth-cleaning tools, you can make sure that food debris will build up in your mouth and damage your smile.

In addition to cleaning your mouth after eating, it is important to be mindful of the foods that you are eating. This means eating nutritious and well-balanced meals. Try to focus on consuming minerals that actually strengthen tooth enamel rather than harming it. Minerals that can strengthen your teeth include calcium and phosphorus, which are often found in products such as nuts, meats and cheeses. These minerals are known for remineralizing your tooth enamel and protecting your smile against dental erosion. Furthermore, eating crunchy foods that are high in water content can produce saliva, a substance that is useful for cavity prevention, naturalizing harmful acids in your mouth and washing away debris.

Most individuals at some point in time in their life have experienced halitosis. Halitosis, also known as bad breath, is an oral health condition in which foul odors emanate from your mouth. Bad breath can be caused by bacteria and plaque buildup in your mouth, lingering food residue, oral health ailments, and deep underlying issues within your body. In order to treat your bad breath, it is important to first understand what is causing it.

If you have bad breath that is being caused by your mouth, mouthwash may be able to treat it. This includes bad breath that is caused by foods you eat and the habits you partake in. If you have poor oral hygiene, it is important to first rinse away all bacteria and plaque buildup. However, if bad breath continues to return despite effective oral health care cleanings, the use of mouthwash, and the avoidance of bad habits, it may be caused by an underlying illness.

Gum disease, which is an infection of your gum tissue, can contribute to bad breath. In order to ensure that bad breath does not continue to return, it is important to first treat your gum disease. In addition, bad breath can be caused by underlying ailments deep within your body. This includes any liver or kidney problems and ailments that you may be suffering from. In addition, respiratory tract infections have been known to cause bad breath.

Did you know that sleep apnea often causes snoring, but conversely, snoring does not always indicate sleep apnea? Due to its difficulty being diagnosed as we often fail to consciously wake up when it affects us, sleep apnea can go untreated for years. Getting checked for sleep apnea is important though because it can cause a variety of health issues including irregular heartbeats, stroke, and even heart attacks.

Have you been diagnosed with sleep apnea? If so, here are some treatment methods:

– Your sleeping traditions could be a contributing factor to your sleep apnea. The direction in which you sleep and how much you toss and turn at nights could affect, cause, or contribute to the sleep disorder.

– If you have sleep apnea, there are services that can open your airway, including a CPAP, also called a continuous positive air pressure device, which can open airways through your nasal passages.

– There are oral health care treatments for sleep apnea that can keep your airway open as you sleep.

– There are surgical treatments which can be used to prevent sleep apnea from occurring.

There are two types of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, which is produced by a blockage in the airway, and central sleep apnea, which is caused by failed signals from your brain to your breathing muscles. If you are in need of a treatment for sleep apnea, our Denver Restorative Dentistry team in Broomfield, Colorado can help.

To schedule a visit with our prosthodontists, Dr. Goggins or Dr. Esguerra, please call 303-586-1019 today to schedule a consultation. We are pleased to provide dental sleep therapy to help you get the sleep you deserve!
