When it comes to dental crowns, two main options exist: traditional crowns and same-day crowns. Both serve the same purpose—restoring a damaged or decayed tooth—but they differ significantly in terms of procedure, time and cost. Today we will break down the differences to help you make an informed decision.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that cover a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its function, shape and appearance. Crowns are often recommended for patients with large cavities, cracked or chipped teeth, root canal-treated teeth or severely worn-down enamel.

Traditional Crowns: The Tried-and-True Option

Traditional crowns have been the go-to for dental restorations for decades. Here is how the process works:

  1. Multiple Visits: Typically, traditional crowns require two appointments. During the first visit, one of our skilled doctors will prepare the tooth by removing the damaged or decayed portion. An impression of your tooth is taken and sent to a dental lab, where your custom crown is made.
  2. Temporary Crown: While your permanent crown is being crafted, you will wear a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.
  3. Permanent Placement: After about two weeks, your permanent crown will be ready, and you will return to our office to have it cemented in place.
  4. Material Variety: Traditional crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys or a combination of these.

Advantages of Traditional Crowns:

  • Customization: Because the crown is crafted in a lab, the color, shape and fit can be highly customized.
  • Durability: Lab-made crowns are often stronger and more durable, especially metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
  • Material Choices: You have more options for the crown’s material, which can impact both cost and appearance.

Disadvantages:

  • Time: The biggest drawback is the waiting period. It takes about two weeks to get the permanent crown.
  • Multiple Visits: You will need at least two visits to complete the process.

Same-Day Crowns: Modern Convenience

Same-day crowns, also known as CEREC crowns, are a relatively new option that leverages advanced CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology. Here is how the process works:

  1. One Appointment: With same-day crowns, our doctor will prepare the tooth and create a digital scan using a specialized camera. This 3D scan is used to design your crown.
  2. In-Office Milling: The digital design is sent to an in-office milling machine, which carves your crown from a block of ceramic in about an hour.
  3. Immediate Placement: Once the crown is ready, it is immediately placed and bonded to your tooth.

Advantages of Same-Day Crowns:

  • Time-Saving: You can walk in and out with a permanent crown in a single appointment.
  • No Temporary Crown: Since the entire process is done in one day, you will not need to wear a temporary crown.

Disadvantages:

  • Material Limitation: Same-day crowns are typically made from ceramic, which may not be as strong as other materials like metal.
  • Less Customization: Although the crown can be color-matched to your tooth, the same level of detailed customization offered by traditional lab-made crowns may not be possible.

Spring is a great time for making changes, including when it comes to refreshing your smile! While dental restorations are our signature services, our Denver Restorative Dentistry team offers cosmetic treatments to bring out the best in your smile so you want to flash your smile often and with confidence.

You may think of dentistry as being mainly functional, and it definitely is that, but for our team it’s also about bringing a touch of artistry to the dental work we perform for you. All of our prosthodontists, Drs. Goggins, Aguirre, Pitz, Poineal and Chertok, are committed to bringing you the functional and aesthetically pleasing smile you desire and deserve. Our cosmetic dentistry options beautifully correct unsightly cosmetic imperfections in your teeth using dental veneers, dental bonding or teeth whitening.

1-Dental Veneers
These custom-crafted wafer thin porcelain or resin shells are bonded onto the front of your teeth. Veneers can beautify a single tooth or your whole mouth! They are ideal for sealing gaps or spaces between teeth, brightening stained or discolored teeth and straightening uneven looking teeth. They can even fix slightly twisted, curved teeth and restore a tooth that has sustained minor damage. We make your veneers in our onsite dental lab with our master technicians for the highest quality and a long-lasting smile.

2-Dental Bonding
If you are having a tooth bonded, we will place a composite resin material right onto the tooth. Our prosthodontist will expertly shape and sculpt the bonded area to fit your tooth and fix any flaws in how it looks. After the resin has hardened we can trim and polish it to perfection, leaving your smile with a long lasting beautiful restoration. This treatment effectively closes tooth gaps and spaces between teeth, corrects a tooth’s shape and color and restores teeth that are chipped or cracked. Not only will your teeth blend in naturally with the rest of your teeth with dental bonding, but we can often perform this treatment in just one comfortable visit to our office.

3-Teeth Whitening
If you have been wanting your teeth to look whiter and brighter our professional teeth whitening treatment might be your best bet! We can effectively lighten stained and discolored teeth that have darkened due to normal aging, lax dental hygiene care, drinking staining drinks (coffee, tea, wine and soda) and foods (berries, tomato-based sauces, soy sauce and curry). Your teeth can also stain dramatically if you use tobacco in any form, and from some medications and illnesses.

Consultation

Whatever cosmetic changes you would like to make in your smile, our prosthodontists are excited to make those for you. To learn more or to schedule your consultation, please call 303-586-1019 today!

When it comes to your smile, there are times you may need dental restorations to replace missing teeth. February  is host to Valentine’s Day and National Toothache Day, which makes it a great time to show your smile some love and make sure your pearly whites get the attention they need and deserve. Never ignore a toothache, because unless it’s from a bit of food lodged between the gums and teeth, there is likely something very wrong with the tooth.

Never Ignore a Toothache

A toothache can arise for several reasons including severe infection that has damaged a big area of the tooth and the supportive bone material. Another cause is when tooth decay has ravaged a tooth so much that it can’t be fixed with a dental restoration. Also, our doctors may extract a tooth when there is extensive crowding in the mouth from having too many teeth to fit properly. Don’t worry though, if you have a tooth that needs pulling, our prosthodontists can use sedation dentistry to make sure your tooth extraction is both comfortable and as painless as possible. We understand that your dental experience leaves a lasting impression.

Once one or more teeth are gone, our skilled Denver Restorative Dentistry team can replace missing teeth. We have a variety of tooth replacement choices that we have used to help many satisfied patients smile again with pride by replacing lost teeth with one of our premier dental restorations:

We are excited to help you do the same for your smile! We can customize a treatment plan for you so that you can once again smile, eat and speak with ease and confidence. No more hiding your smile when you are with others. A healthy looking smile can make an impact on your personal and work relationships and improve your quality of life.

Call Today!

Now is a good time to show your smile some love as your oral health truly impacts many areas of your life. One of our premier  prosthodontists, Drs. Goggins, Aguirre, Pitz, Poineal and Chertok will be happy to meet with you to evaluate your oral health and offer restorative solutions in Broomfield, Colorado. Please call 303-586-1019 today!

What sets us apart when it comes to helping our patients get the healthy, beautiful smile they need and desire? Our full-service practice at Denver Restorative Dentistry allows our skilled prosthodontists and dedicated team to provide specialized dental services to meet your unique needs. This includes cosmetic, general and restorative dentistry treatments in Broomfield, Colorado.

Additionally, all of our lab cases are done in our office by four full-time lab technicians, and we are the only dentists in the area that have an on-site full-service dental lab. You can feel confident that your restoration will be made of premium quality materials thanks to our state-of-the-art equipment that ensures optimal results.

Drs. Goggins, Aguirre, Pitz, Poineal and Chertok oversee all of your lab work so you can expect your high standards to be met. We are pleased to offer the following options to restore your beautiful smile:

-Dentures: Our team can make custom-fitted full dentures, partial dentures, overdentures or implant-supported dentures so you can eat and smile comfortably again.

-Implant-Supported Dentures: We make beautiful, natural-looking All-on-4® implant-supported dentures that will stay comfortably secured in your mouth.

-Full-Mouth Reconstruction: Using full-mouth reconstruction, we can provide various restorations (bridges, crowns, implants, veneers, dental fillings, dentures).

-Crowns: We use zirconia and porcelain crowns to restore a badly damaged tooth that fit over the entire tooth from the gums up so your tooth looks, feels and functions naturally.

-Bridges: Our custom-fitted, fixed dental restorations effectively replace one or more teeth in a row.

-Dental Implants: We replace one, multiple or complete arches of missing teeth using a titanium implant post that is surgically installed in the jawbone for the most stable restoration.

-Fillings: Our dental filling restores a tooth damaged by minor to moderate tooth decay so it can look, feel and function normally again.

-Inlays and Onlays: These custom partial crowns fix tooth damage and decay by restoring the tooth’s health, function and appearance. Inlays are done when the damage has not reached the tooth cusps, while onlays fix the damage affecting one or more tooth cusps.

-Veneers: While not technically a dental restoration, these thin porcelain or resin shells are bonded to the front of your teeth to fix minor tooth damage like chips.

Our prosthodontists strive to provide you with personalized dental care so that you feel relaxed and comfortable during your time in the chair. All of the lab work is performed on-site which helps you save time and doctor visits! If you need adjustments to your restoration, we can help you while you wait. Our team’s mission is to help you smile with confidence for years to come. We welcome you to give us at 303-586-1019 to learn how we can help your smile thrive!

Taking good care of your smile involves daily oral care and routine dental exams and cleanings. Even so, there are times when your oral health may still run into trouble. Whether from tooth damage or dental decay there are treatments that can address these issues and restore your mouth and smile back to full function and an aesthetic appearance. Our skilled prosthodontists, Dr. Taylor Goggins, Dr. Brian Aguirre, Dr. Anna Pitz and Dr. Ralf Poineal can help you get your smile back!

One of the ways we can do this is through full-mouth reconstruction, which can be the best option for when your mouth has suffered excessive decay or damage, seriously harming multiple teeth that will need replacing. So how do you know that you might need a full-mouth reconstruction, here are some of our most common reasons:

  • You have cracked or broken teeth
  • You have suffered a dental injury
  • Your mouth has experienced trauma, severely damaging multiple teeth
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Oral infection
  • Advanced gum disease (periodontitis), a serious oral infection

Whether you have bad oral health, a misaligned bite or missing teeth, these can also harm your remaining teeth and the problem with treating one area at a time is that your remaining teeth will keep wearing down, decaying or inviting further damage. And it’s not just your teeth, but your dental restorations that are at risk. So, one of the most important reasons you have for replacing a lost tooth or fixing a damaged one is so that it won’t harm your other teeth! Full mouth reconstruction allows us to fix your oral issues so your mouth can be healthy again.

Did you know that even long-term exposure to oral acids from the food and drinks (wine, soda, sparkling water) you consume can lead to tooth erosion over time? If you already suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) it can lead to tooth erosion from the constantly present acid coming up. The same happens if you have a serious eating disorder like bulimia that can damage tooth vital tooth enamel.

To determine if you might benefit from having a full mouth reconstruction done by our team at Denver Restorative Dentistry, we will first evaluate your smile’s current oral health and aesthetic appearance and explain how we can improve your smile’s health and beauty overall. Full-mouth reconstruction may mean having a combination of the following treatments done, such as:

  • Bridges
  • Crowns
  • Dentures (complete or partial)
  • Fillings
  • Implants
  • Veneers

Once we have reviewed our results with you to determine what restorations would be best for your unique needs, we can go to work and perform your full mouth restoration. The results mean restoring your full smile in both form and function. Our experienced prosthodontists, Dr. Goggins, Dr. Aguirre, Dr. Pitz and Dr. Poineal have performed many full-mouth reconstructions and are skilled at helping you to receive the same high-quality care so you can fall in love with your smile again (or even for the first time!) You can see some of our successful full-mouth reconstructions here. We invite you to fill out a REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT form. We look forward to scheduling your FREE consultation to see how we can help you restore your healthy, beautiful smile!

If you take good care of your teeth and gums, your natural teeth often remain healthy and strong for a lifetime of beautiful smiles! This means seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups supplementing your own oral hygiene habits, brushing and flossing daily! But sometimes the unforeseen happens and you can lose a tooth because of an accident, decay or an extraction.

When something like this arises, you will want to replace the missing tooth to make sure your smile looks great and to keep your remaining teeth functioning properly without having to make up for that lost tooth. Keeping all of your teeth in place is what is needed to prevent your facial structure from becoming sunken, making you look older than you are. This is where our prosthodontists come into the picture.

Seeing a prosthodontist can help ensure that your smile is in the best of hands, and your dental care is top-notch. With three years of formal education and training past general dentistry under their belt, our prosthodontists give you the “extra mile” in dental care, making sure that your smile looks natural and the restoration fits perfectly.

-Dental hybrids
-Dentures
-Implants
-Restorations
-Veneers
-All-on-4®

With their training and experience, our prosthodontists will take excellent care of your smile, with your treatments customized to your needs. Our team also has a boutique in-house lab, where they are able to ensure the highest quality of your restorations, by working closely with our lab technicians. This allows you to get full-mouth restorations, or dental implants, dentures or customized shades. With the lab on-site, our prosthodontists can make adjustments as well as necessary changes during your appointment time.

Our Denver Restorative Dentistry team replaces lost teeth with natural-looking dental crowns that fit on top of the gums so that your new tooth looks and functions normally again. We use only the best quality materials such as zirconia or porcelain for your crown which can last for many years to come with proper care. While you are waiting for your permanent crown, if needed, we will provide you with a temporary crown. Our dental lab technicians have over 60 years of combined experience creating beautiful dental restorations like crowns, so our master ceramist can blend your new crown seamlessly with your natural teeth. Your final restoration will fit exactly as needed and appear flawless.

If you are looking for high-quality tooth replacements for missing teeth in your smile, you have come to the right place!
